Collapse of the willow shaft: The third "mine accident" at the copper mine since reopening

After the two collapses in 1995 (adit collapse next to the road above the hut shaft) and in 2003 (machine shaft collapse), a collapse of the shaft filling of the willow shaft occurred at the beginning of June 2016 as a result of heavy rainfall.

This interrupted the water drainage in the gallery. The main visitor area was in danger of flooding and becoming inaccessible for all time. Only heavy equipment, many helpers and great financial commitment helped. The municipality of Beckingen, with support from the Saarland Ministry of the Interior, provided special assistance. Three months later, the roadway was clear again and the water was able to run off without a pump. The visitor mine was saved.
